The
V-12 engine is at the heart of what makes the XJ-S an exceptional
car in Jaguar history. Here is a picture of my engine before I
went ape doing all the Engine Beautification
steps. Cleaned up, in stock form it is still an impressive powerplant.
The Jaguar V-12 is a 60 degree vee with single overhead cam
shafts, two valves per cylinder, and electronic fuel injection
feeding an all aluminium 5.3 liter twelve cylinder engine.
Horsepower varies from year, model, and country, but overall
this is a 282 HP engine with 292 lb/ft of torque. Jaguar
understressed this engine, both in possible size and output to
retain smoothness. This engine can be enlarged up to 8 liters,
and 500-600+ horsepower when heavily modified is not unheard of.
In
1995, Jaguar enlarged the engine to 6.0 liters and 313HP. They
also cleaned up the appearance of the engine compartment
considerably. This is a picture of the 6.0 engine. Notice the
beautiful covers that hide all the messy wiring and plumbing
that lie in the vee of the engine. Also notice the vastly
different A/C plumbing and lack of the almost nervous tubing
that plagued the apperance of my engine (above) and
all earlier models. I hear that, although the 6.0L has more power, that the
5.2 engine is actually smoother.
